Doing it in Wellies

Doing it in Wellies is Sam Gray’s account of making a lifestyle choice and deciding to run her own smallholding.

‘At Christmas, presents change from classy clothes to boiler suits; expensive wellies become a worthwhile investment as shoes become obsolete.’

Doing it in Wellies is Sam Gray’s account of making a lifestyle choice and deciding to run her own smallholding. Not a guide or a how-to manual, this book takes the reader on a no-frills journey and offers an insight into Sam’s fabulous, manic and often unenviable life.

Women who care more for Prada than pig-pens will enjoy it. People toying with the idea of bailing from city life will learn from it. And those wanting a good read and a bit of escapism will enjoy curling up with it and getting lost among the hay and fallen apples of Middle Farm.

Sam is a person that you want to talk to. Someone you ask what she’s been up to and wait eagerly to hear her response, because nothing is what you might expect for this mother and wife living in the Shropshire Hills.

What a treat it’s been to curl up with this gorgeous book from Sam Gray. As a very amateur veg grower and lover of animals this was dream reading. The story of how she got her small holding off the ground will enchant wannabe’s and old hands alike. The deep joy and satisfaction that rearing livestock and living off the land has bought her family is a heart warming read, but told without sentimentality and with a lot of extremely practical tips on how to go about building your own slice of Middle Farm heaven – even if it’s just in a grow bag on your patio!

I’ve just finished this amazing book and it just left me with such a wonderful sense of… ‘all is right in the world’! Although the author certainly doesn’t dress up the hardships and compromises of running a small holding alongside all the other busy ‘Mum’ jobs we all do, I found it truly inspiring and made me want to jump up and get my wellies on and just enjoy being outside! A wonderful read by a really insightful lady.

A lovely and inspiring book with beautiful photography throughout. Sam shares her highs and lows of getting things running smoothly on what sounds like the perfect smallholding in Shropshire. Always ready to take on the next challenge, it’s an amazing insight into one woman’s transformation from executive to successful pig farmer!

Told from the heart, like you are sitting with Sam in front of the fire with a mug of hot chocolate. A simple story about following your dreams, it can be done!! A thoroughly enjoyable read.

I recommended this book for our book club – before reading it – and wow – so glad I did. It inspired such wonderful discussion about passion, vision, courage to follow a dream, hard work and making it all fun! I have shared the story with friends around the globe and they are all inspired to read it too. And the photographs make it a book to keep on the coffee table.

What a great book, as a woman who cares more for Prada than pig-pens I really enjoyed it and devoured it in one sitting. I also related to her transformation of life from city girl to life in Shropshire. Very well written in a quirky and easy to follow style. The book is now doing the rounds amongst my Prada besties!

Bought for a friend who had just acquired an acre, looking forward to borrowing it myself.

“Just read my lovely book feeling truly inspired! I need a boiler suit! Thank you so much for such a lovely present and inspiration. We have to go there!”

This is an inspirational book telling the wonderful, truthful and moving story of Sam and her family’s leap into the world of smallholding. As an aspirational smallholder I was hooked; ‘Doing it in Wellies’ has fuelled my desire to fulfil my dream.

Owner of pigs, sheep and hens, not to mention an author. She seemed like the kind of lady we would like to meet so we booked 3 nights in her holiday cottages!

This is a fantastic book. I bought it for a friend’s birthday but sneakily read half of it before giving it to her. My friend has been kind enough to bring it round so I could finish the other half. It is inspiring and beautifully written, not once becoming sentimental, but has brought both my friend and me to tears with Sam’s honest telling of her story. I thoroughly recommend it whether you are an aspirational small holder or if you just want a heartwarming and very good read.
